Addiction Recovery eBulletin
Karen Corcoran Walsh sponsored the biographical movie at the Writers in Treatment Festival of Laughs in Los Angeles, California. This sponsorship was possible through the Writers in Recovery non-profit organization.
West Coast Kid is an authorized biography based on the book of the same name, this documentary features author Travis Waters and others detailing the events of his life from high school basketball superstar to drug smuggler to prisoner to coach/mentor. His life is a cautionary tale on the dangers of the drug world, but a redemptive one in which he now coaches youth basketball and counsels at-risk youth. Owners Karen Corcoran-Walsh and Chris Walsh aide the Westcoast Film Development team by providing funding for their film development.
Writers in Treatment (WIT)
Karen and Chris Walsh were one of the sponsors of the Writers in Treatment Festival of Laughs in Los Angeles, California. The Writers in Treatment (WIT) is a non-profit that helps writers addicted to drugs or alcohol to get effective treatment. Along with Karen, WIT was able to help sponsor writers such as Travis Waters and his acclaimed book West Coast Kid. They also helped Mike Peniera famed rockstar and musical producer who created the song for the West Coast Kid film.
Other authors that were honored included Lou Gossett Jr., actor, and author of “An Actor and a Gentlemen.” This event also had special appearances from Joanna Cassidy (Blade Runner) and comedian Barry Diamond!
Broward School Take 5 to Stay Alive
Inspirations for Youth and Families teen rehab won the acclaimed 2nd Annual “Take 5 to Stay Alive,” Student Video Contest. All public and private high school students were invited to help spread the word that texting and driving is a deadly combination. The students were challenged to write and produce an original Public Service Announcement (PSA) that told everyone to “Take 5 to Stay Alive – Don’t Text & Drive.” This 2nd annual contest encouraged teens to create effective messages for safe driving by submitting an original 30 or 60 second PSA to remind their peers not to text and drive.
Miami Dolphins Inspirations for Youth Award
Inspirations for Youth and Families Teen Rehab and the Miami Dolphins teamed up to bring the South Florida Inspirations Award – honoring local South Florida heroes. Each recipient receives the Inspirations’ award along with two tickets to the game and two Ford Sideline Passes. Dolphin Alumnus Nat Moore and Inspirations owners Chris and Karen Walsh presents the award on the field during the game. Congratulations to Boca Raton City Councilwoman Constance Scott, the South Florida Inspiration Award recipient for the Dolphins vs. Chargers game on November 17, 2013.
Chris Evert Pro Celebrity Tennis Classic
Inspirations for Youth has been a long-time proud sponsor of the Chris Evert Pro-Celebrity Tennis Tournament. Since 1989, Chris Evert’s efforts have contributed over $20.6 million in an ongoing campaign against drug abuse and child neglect in Florida. Chris Evert frequently volunteers her time and donates money to help end drug addiction and child neglect in the south Florida region.
Nope Candlelight Vigil
Out of respect for those who we have lost to the fight of addiction Inspirations of Youth and Families decided to create a NOPE candlelight vigil service. This serves to honor and remember those who have passed as well as, teach our teens about the consequences of drug abuse.
2013 Prism Awards with Lou Gosset Jr.
Karen Corcoran-Walsh was a major sponsor of the 2013 Prism Awards. During this year, among the many to receive an award was Lou Gosset Jr. for his contributions to Art, Film, and the Recovery community. The Prism Awards was created to honor those involved in projects that have made a difference in communities all over the nation. Karen and her husband Chris Walsh is honored to have sponsored such a prestigious and honorable cause.
