South Florida Philanthropist’ donation elevates FAU Tennis to new heights

Karen Corcoran Walsh’s donation to the Florida Atlantic University’s Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team has not only made both athletic programs more competitive, but greatly improved the overall stature of the university. Her financial contributions along with the other generous donors were used to finance and build a state-of-the-art on-campus tennis facility.

Heather Walton, a member of the women’s tennis team was ecstatic over Karen’s donation, which allows her to compete at the highest level in division one sports.

“It feels awesome having Karen’s support,” said Heather Walton, a star player on the FAU women’s tennis team. “She is so selfless by reaching out to the community. It is such a great quality to have and I look up to her. We all appreciate her donation and are going to make her proud.”

“I believe it is important to invest in our community especially our youth. I am fortunate to be able to help these young adults achieve their goals and dreams.”

Karen explained why she felt compelled to help fund the tennis facility. “As a life-long athlete, I am proud to be a part of FAU and have the opportunity to help fund the construction of this beautiful tennis facility. I look forward to watching the student athletes attain goals and accomplishments that have never been achieved before and it is a great honor,” said Karen Corcoran-Walsh.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The FAU Athletics Department held a ribbon cutting ceremony to show off their beautiful new tennis courts. FAU president John Kelly as well as other prominent school officials recognized the donors. FAU men’s and women’s tennis teams, students, dignitaries, and members of the community were all in attendance . In addition, Karen was able to meet the tennis team members in person. She also celebrated the prestigious event with university officials and her peers who also helped fund the beautiful new facility with stylish blue tennis courts.

“It feels awesome having people like Karen’s support. It is unbelievable and she’s so selfless the way she reaches out to the community. I definitely look up to people like her.”

-Heather Walton, FAU Women’s Tennis Team Player

Along with Karen’s many other contributions, she plans to continue her FAU community involvement. Karen’s donation is just an extension of her role as the owner of two addiction treatment centers. Through the years, her work has saved so many lives. Karen’s addiction treatment facilities rebuild families allowing people with substance abuse and mental health issues a second chance in life.

Perhaps Karen’s community involvement can be best exemplified by her numerous philanthropic endeavors. Some of these include her sponsorship of the Boca Police Athletic League’s (BocaPAL) program to help at-risk children and teens as well as her community involvement with Ball Stars Ball Stars Youth Camp which is led by former NBA All-Stars Otis Birdsong and Micheal Ray Richardson to help deserving youth reach their potential.

This is undoubtedly a small sample size of Karen’s philanthropy. See what other community activities Karen is involved in.
